The 2008 contest saw Iowa line up behind Obama, delivering 7 electoral votes to the Democratic ticket. Iowa ended up on the winning side — Barack Obama captured the White House that year.

The result flipped Iowa away from the Republican it had supported in 2004. The region divided — Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Illinois joined Iowa for the Democratic ticket, while Missouri, Nebraska, and South Dakota did not.
