The 2016 contest saw North Dakota line up behind Trump, delivering 3 electoral votes to the Republican ticket. That placed North Dakota with the eventual winner: Donald Trump went on to take the presidency, and North Dakota was part of his column.
North Dakota stayed in the Republican column for the 13th straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1968. The region divided — Montana and South Dakota joined North Dakota for the Republican ticket, while Minnesota did not. Over its 35 recorded presidential cycles, North Dakota has backed the Republican party more than any other — 30 times in all. The vote fell within the Modern Polarization — Close elections in a divided country.
Nationally, Donald Trump finished with 304 of the 538 electoral votes to Hillary Clinton's 227. Though Donald Trump won the Electoral College, Hillary Clinton drew more of the national popular vote — 48.18% to 46.09%.
