In 2020, North Dakota awarded its 3 electoral votes to Trump of the Republican party. Nationally the result broke the other way — Joe Biden (Democratic) won the presidency, leaving North Dakota among the states he did not carry.

It marked the 14th consecutive election in which North Dakota backed the Republican party, a streak reaching back to 1968.
