In 2004, Vermont awarded its 3 electoral votes to Kerry of the Democratic party. Nationally the result broke the other way — George W. Bush (Republican) won the presidency, leaving Vermont among the states he did not carry.

It marked the 4th consecutive election in which Vermont backed the Democratic party, a streak reaching back to 1992. Vermont did not move alone — neighboring New York, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire broke the same way in 2004.
