The 2000 contest saw Vermont line up behind Gore, delivering 3 electoral votes to the Democratic ticket. Nationally the result broke the other way — George W. Bush (Republican) won the presidency, leaving Vermont among the states he did not carry.

It marked the 3rd consecutive election in which Vermont backed the Democratic party, a streak reaching back to 1992. The region divided — New York and Massachusetts joined Vermont for the Democratic ticket, while New Hampshire did not.
