2004
Reading the 2004 result in Arizona
Arizona backed Bush (Republican) in the 2004 presidential election, casting 10 electoral votes for the ticket. That placed Arizona with the eventual winner: George W. Bush went on to take the presidency, and Arizona was part of his column.
Arizona stayed in the Republican column for the 14th straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1952. The region divided — Nevada, Utah, Colorado, and New Mexico joined Arizona for the Republican ticket, while California did not. Over its 29 recorded presidential cycles, Arizona has backed the Republican party more than any other — 18 times in all. The vote fell within the Modern Polarization — Close elections in a divided country.
Nationally, George W. Bush finished with 286 of the 538 electoral votes to John Kerry's 251. George W. Bush led the national popular vote with 50.73% of the ballots cast.
