Utah stayed in the Republican column for the 9th straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1968. The region divided — Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, Arizona, and Nevada joined Utah for the Republican ticket, while New Mexico did not. Over its 33 recorded presidential cycles, Utah has backed the Republican party more than any other — 23 times in all. The vote fell within the Modern Polarization — Close elections in a divided country.
Nationally, George W. Bush finished with 271 of the 538 electoral votes to Al Gore's 266. Though George W. Bush won the Electoral College, Al Gore drew more of the national popular vote — 48.38% to 47.87%.
