Utah backed Romney (Republican) in the 2012 presidential election, casting 6 electoral votes for the ticket. Nationally the result broke the other way — Barack Obama (Democratic) won the presidency, leaving Utah among the states he did not carry.

It marked the 12th consecutive election in which Utah backed the Republican party, a streak reaching back to 1968. The region divided — Idaho, Wyoming, and Arizona joined Utah for the Republican ticket, while Colorado, New Mexico, and Nevada did not. Across the 33 presidential elections Utah has taken part in, it has most often sided with the Republican party (23 times).
