New Jersey in 1992

The 1992 contest saw New Jersey line up behind Clinton, delivering 15 electoral votes to the Democratic ticket. That placed New Jersey with the eventual winner: Bill Clinton went on to take the presidency, and New Jersey was part of his column.

The result flipped New Jersey away from the Republican ticket it had backed in each of the previous 6 cycles. New Jersey did not move alone — neighboring New York, Pennsylvania, and Delaware broke the same way in 1992. Over its 60 recorded presidential cycles, New Jersey has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 31 times in all. The vote fell within the Modern Polarization — Close elections in a divided country.

Nationally, Bill Clinton finished with 370 of the 538 electoral votes to George H. W. Bush's 168. Bill Clinton led the national popular vote with 43.01% of the ballots cast.
