New Mexico in 1968
The 1968 contest saw New Mexico line up behind Nixon, delivering 4 electoral votes to the Republican ticket. That placed New Mexico with the eventual winner: Richard Nixon went on to take the presidency, and New Mexico was part of his column.
The result flipped New Mexico away from the Democratic ticket it had backed in each of the previous 2 cycles. The region divided — Arizona, Utah, Colorado, and Oklahoma joined New Mexico for the Republican ticket, while Texas did not. Over its 29 recorded presidential cycles, New Mexico has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 17 times in all. The vote fell within the Cold War Realignment — Nixon, Reagan, and the Republican South.
Nationally, Richard Nixon finished with 301 of the 538 electoral votes to Hubert Humphrey's 191. Richard Nixon led the national popular vote with 43.42% of the ballots cast.
