The 1956 contest saw New Mexico line up behind Eisenhower, delivering 4 electoral votes to the Republican ticket. New Mexico ended up on the winning side — Dwight D. Eisenhower captured the White House that year.

It marked the 2nd consecutive election in which New Mexico backed the Republican party, a streak reaching back to 1952. The region divided — Arizona, Utah, Colorado, and Oklahoma joined New Mexico for the Republican ticket, while Texas did not. Across the 29 presidential elections New Mexico has taken part in, it has most often sided with the Democratic party (17 times). The vote fell within the New Deal Coalition — FDR, civil rights, and the long Democratic majority.
