1968
Reading the 1968 result in Maryland
Maryland backed Humphrey (Democratic) in the 1968 presidential election, casting 10 electoral votes for the ticket. The presidency went elsewhere: Richard Nixon (Republican) won nationally, while Maryland had backed a different ticket.
Maryland stayed in the Democratic column for the 3rd straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1960. The region divided — West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and District of Columbia joined Maryland for the Democratic ticket, while Virginia and Delaware did not. Over its 60 recorded presidential cycles, Maryland has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 34 times in all. The vote fell within the Cold War Realignment — Nixon, Reagan, and the Republican South.
Nationally, Richard Nixon finished with 301 of the 538 electoral votes to Hubert Humphrey's 191. Richard Nixon led the national popular vote with 43.42% of the ballots cast.
