In 1952, Maryland awarded its 9 electoral votes to Eisenhower of the Republican party. Maryland ended up on the winning side — Dwight D. Eisenhower captured the White House that year.

It marked the 2nd consecutive election in which Maryland backed the Republican party, a streak reaching back to 1948. The region divided — Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Delaware joined Maryland for the Republican ticket, while West Virginia did not.
