1968
What happened in Louisiana, 1968
In 1968, Louisiana awarded its 10 electoral votes to Wallace of the American (Know-Nothing) party. The presidency went elsewhere: Richard Nixon (Republican) won nationally, while Louisiana had backed a different ticket.
The result flipped Louisiana away from the Republican it had supported in 1964. The region divided — Arkansas and Mississippi joined Louisiana for the American (Know-Nothing) ticket, while Texas did not. Over its 53 recorded presidential cycles, Louisiana has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 29 times in all. The vote fell within the Cold War Realignment — Nixon, Reagan, and the Republican South.
Nationally, Richard Nixon finished with 301 of the 538 electoral votes to Hubert Humphrey's 191. Richard Nixon led the national popular vote with 43.42% of the ballots cast.
