The 1964 contest saw Washington line up behind Johnson, delivering 9 electoral votes to the Democratic ticket. Washington ended up on the winning side — Lyndon B. Johnson captured the White House that year.

It marked the 2nd consecutive election in which Washington backed the Democratic party, a streak reaching back to 1960. Washington did not move alone — neighboring Oregon and Idaho broke the same way in 1964. Across the 34 presidential elections Washington has taken part in, it has most often sided with the Democratic party (19 times). The vote fell within the New Deal Coalition — FDR, civil rights, and the long Democratic majority.
