New Jersey backed Johnson (Democratic) in the 1964 presidential election, casting 17 electoral votes for the ticket. New Jersey ended up on the winning side — Lyndon B. Johnson captured the White House that year.

It marked the 2nd consecutive election in which New Jersey backed the Democratic party, a streak reaching back to 1960. New Jersey did not move alone — neighboring New York, Pennsylvania, and Delaware broke the same way in 1964.
