New Jersey in 1956

The 1956 contest saw New Jersey line up behind Eisenhower, delivering 16 electoral votes to the Republican ticket. That placed New Jersey with the eventual winner: Dwight D. Eisenhower went on to take the presidency, and New Jersey was part of his column.

New Jersey stayed in the Republican column for the 3rd straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1948. New Jersey did not move alone — neighboring New York, Pennsylvania, and Delaware broke the same way in 1956. Over its 60 recorded presidential cycles, New Jersey has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 31 times in all. The vote fell within the New Deal Coalition — FDR, civil rights, and the long Democratic majority.

Nationally, Dwight D. Eisenhower finished with 457 of the 531 electoral votes to Adlai Stevenson II's 73. Dwight D. Eisenhower led the national popular vote with 57.37% of the ballots cast.
