Missouri backed Kennedy (Democratic) in the 1960 presidential election, casting 13 electoral votes for the ticket. Missouri ended up on the winning side — John F. Kennedy captured the White House that year.

It marked the 2nd consecutive election in which Missouri backed the Democratic party, a streak reaching back to 1956. The region divided — Illinois, Kentucky, and Arkansas joined Missouri for the Democratic ticket, while Iowa, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska did not. Across the 52 presidential elections Missouri has taken part in, it has most often sided with the Democratic party (33 times).
