What happened in Mississippi, 1952

In 1952, Mississippi awarded its 8 electoral votes to Stevenson of the Democratic party. The presidency went elsewhere: Dwight D. Eisenhower (Republican) won nationally, while Mississippi had backed a different ticket.

The result flipped Mississippi away from the States' Rights Democratic it had supported in 1948. The region divided — Louisiana, Arkansas, and Alabama joined Mississippi for the Democratic ticket, while Tennessee did not. Over its 51 recorded presidential cycles, Mississippi has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 30 times in all. The vote fell within the New Deal Coalition — FDR, civil rights, and the long Democratic majority.

Nationally, Dwight D. Eisenhower finished with 442 of the 531 electoral votes to Adlai Stevenson II's 89. Dwight D. Eisenhower led the national popular vote with 55.18% of the ballots cast.
