The 1960 contest saw Mississippi line up behind Kennedy, delivering 8 electoral votes to the Democratic ticket. Mississippi ended up on the winning side — John F. Kennedy captured the White House that year.

It marked the 3rd consecutive election in which Mississippi backed the Democratic party, a streak reaching back to 1952. The region divided — Louisiana, Arkansas, and Alabama joined Mississippi for the Democratic ticket, while Tennessee did not.
