The 1952 contest saw Illinois line up behind Eisenhower, delivering 27 electoral votes to the Republican ticket. Illinois ended up on the winning side — Dwight D. Eisenhower captured the White House that year.

Eisenhower's win closed out Illinois's 5-election run of voting Democratic. The region divided — Wisconsin, Iowa, Missouri, and Indiana joined Illinois for the Republican ticket, while Kentucky did not. Across the 53 presidential elections Illinois has taken part in, it has most often sided with the Democratic party (26 times).
