1960
Reading the 1960 result in Illinois
Illinois backed Kennedy (Democratic) in the 1960 presidential election, casting 27 electoral votes for the ticket. That placed Illinois with the eventual winner: John F. Kennedy went on to take the presidency, and Illinois was part of his column.
The result flipped Illinois away from the Republican ticket it had backed in each of the previous 2 cycles. The region divided — Wisconsin, Missouri, and Kentucky joined Illinois for the Democratic ticket, while Iowa and Indiana did not. Over its 53 recorded presidential cycles, Illinois has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 26 times in all. The vote fell within the New Deal Coalition — FDR, civil rights, and the long Democratic majority.
Nationally, John F. Kennedy finished with 303 of the 537 electoral votes to Richard Nixon's 219. John F. Kennedy led the national popular vote with 49.72% of the ballots cast.
