1952
Arkansas in 1952
The 1952 contest saw Arkansas line up behind Stevenson, delivering 8 electoral votes to the Democratic ticket. Nationally the result broke the other way — Dwight D. Eisenhower (Republican) won the presidency, leaving Arkansas among the states he did not carry.
It marked the 20th consecutive election in which Arkansas backed the Democratic party, a streak reaching back to 1876. The region divided — Mississippi and Louisiana joined Arkansas for the Democratic ticket, while Missouri, Tennessee, Texas, and Oklahoma did not. Across the 47 presidential elections Arkansas has taken part in, it has most often sided with the Democratic party (32 times). The vote fell within the New Deal Coalition — FDR, civil rights, and the long Democratic majority.
In the national count, Dwight D. Eisenhower took 442 of the 531 electoral votes, against Adlai Stevenson II's 89. Dwight D. Eisenhower led the national popular vote with 55.18% of the ballots cast.
