What happened in North Dakota, 1948

In 1948, North Dakota awarded its 4 electoral votes to Dewey of the Republican party. Nationally the result broke the other way — Harry S. Truman (Democratic) won the presidency, leaving North Dakota among the states he did not carry.

It marked the 3rd consecutive election in which North Dakota backed the Republican party, a streak reaching back to 1940. The region divided — South Dakota joined North Dakota for the Republican ticket, while Montana and Minnesota did not. Across the 35 presidential elections North Dakota has taken part in, it has most often sided with the Republican party (30 times). The vote fell within the New Deal Coalition — FDR, civil rights, and the long Democratic majority.

In the national count, Harry S. Truman took 303 of the 531 electoral votes, against Thomas E. Dewey's 189. Harry S. Truman led the national popular vote with 49.55% of the ballots cast.
