North Dakota in 1956

The 1956 contest saw North Dakota line up behind Eisenhower, delivering 4 electoral votes to the Republican ticket. That placed North Dakota with the eventual winner: Dwight D. Eisenhower went on to take the presidency, and North Dakota was part of his column.

North Dakota stayed in the Republican column for the 5th straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1940. The region divided — Montana and South Dakota joined North Dakota for the Republican ticket, while Minnesota did not. Over its 35 recorded presidential cycles, North Dakota has backed the Republican party more than any other — 30 times in all. The vote fell within the New Deal Coalition — FDR, civil rights, and the long Democratic majority.

Nationally, Dwight D. Eisenhower finished with 457 of the 531 electoral votes to Adlai Stevenson II's 73. Dwight D. Eisenhower led the national popular vote with 57.37% of the ballots cast.
