What happened in Tennessee, 1936

In 1936, Tennessee awarded its 11 electoral votes to Roosevelt of the Democratic party. That placed Tennessee with the eventual winner: Franklin D. Roosevelt went on to take the presidency, and Tennessee was part of his column.

Tennessee stayed in the Democratic column for the 2nd straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1932. Tennessee did not move alone — neighboring Kentucky, Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Missouri broke the same way in 1936. Over its 57 recorded presidential cycles, Tennessee has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 24 times in all. The vote fell within the New Deal Coalition — FDR, civil rights, and the long Democratic majority.

Nationally, Franklin D. Roosevelt finished with 523 of the 531 electoral votes to Alf Landon's 8. Franklin D. Roosevelt led the national popular vote with 60.8% of the ballots cast.
