Tennessee in 1956

The 1956 contest saw Tennessee line up behind Eisenhower, delivering 11 electoral votes to the Republican ticket. That placed Tennessee with the eventual winner: Dwight D. Eisenhower went on to take the presidency, and Tennessee was part of his column.

Tennessee stayed in the Republican column for the 2nd straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1952. The region divided — Virginia joined Tennessee for the Republican ticket, while Kentucky, North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Missouri did not. Over its 57 recorded presidential cycles, Tennessee has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 24 times in all. The vote fell within the New Deal Coalition — FDR, civil rights, and the long Democratic majority.

Nationally, Dwight D. Eisenhower finished with 457 of the 531 electoral votes to Adlai Stevenson II's 73. Dwight D. Eisenhower led the national popular vote with 57.37% of the ballots cast.
