What happened in North Dakota, 1924

In 1924, North Dakota awarded its 5 electoral votes to LaFollette of the Progressive party. Nationally the result broke the other way — Calvin Coolidge (Republican) won the presidency, leaving North Dakota among the states he did not carry.

LaFollette's win closed out North Dakota's 2-election run of voting Republican. It stood apart from its neighbors: Montana, South Dakota, and Minnesota went the other way that year. Across the 35 presidential elections North Dakota has taken part in, it has most often sided with the Republican party (30 times). The vote fell within the Roaring Twenties — Republican dominance to the Great Depression.

In the national count, Calvin Coolidge took 382 of the 531 electoral votes, against John W. Davis's 136. Calvin Coolidge led the national popular vote with 54.04% of the ballots cast.
