1908
North Dakota in 1908
The 1908 contest saw North Dakota line up behind Taft, delivering 4 electoral votes to the Republican ticket. North Dakota ended up on the winning side — William Howard Taft captured the White House that year.
It marked the 6th consecutive election in which North Dakota backed the Republican party, a streak reaching back to 1888. North Dakota did not move alone — neighboring Montana, South Dakota, and Minnesota broke the same way in 1908. Across the 35 presidential elections North Dakota has taken part in, it has most often sided with the Republican party (30 times). The vote fell within the Progressive Era — Trust-busting, suffrage, and World War I.
In the national count, William Howard Taft took 321 of the 483 electoral votes, against William Jennings Bryan's 162. William Howard Taft led the national popular vote with 51.57% of the ballots cast.
