West Virginia in 1916

The 1916 contest saw West Virginia line up behind Hughes, delivering 8 electoral votes to the Republican ticket. Nationally the result broke the other way — Woodrow Wilson (Democratic) won the presidency, leaving West Virginia among the states he did not carry.

The result flipped West Virginia away from the Democratic it had supported in 1912. The region divided — Pennsylvania joined West Virginia for the Republican ticket, while Ohio, Maryland, Virginia, and Kentucky did not. Across the 41 presidential elections West Virginia has taken part in, it has most often sided with the Democratic party (22 times). The vote fell within the Progressive Era — Trust-busting, suffrage, and World War I.

In the national count, Woodrow Wilson took 277 of the 531 electoral votes, against Charles Evans Hughes's 254. Woodrow Wilson led the national popular vote with 49.24% of the ballots cast.
