West Virginia in 1904

The 1904 contest saw West Virginia line up behind Roosevelt, delivering 7 electoral votes to the Republican ticket. That placed West Virginia with the eventual winner: Theodore Roosevelt went on to take the presidency, and West Virginia was part of his column.

West Virginia stayed in the Republican column for the 3rd straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1896. The region divided — Ohio and Pennsylvania joined West Virginia for the Republican ticket, while Maryland, Virginia, and Kentucky did not. Over its 41 recorded presidential cycles, West Virginia has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 22 times in all. The vote fell within the Progressive Era — Trust-busting, suffrage, and World War I.

Nationally, Theodore Roosevelt finished with 336 of the 476 electoral votes to Alton B. Parker's 140. Theodore Roosevelt led the national popular vote with 56.42% of the ballots cast.
