Connecticut in 1916

The 1916 contest saw Connecticut line up behind Hughes, delivering 7 electoral votes to the Republican ticket. Nationally the result broke the other way — Woodrow Wilson (Democratic) won the presidency, leaving Connecticut among the states he did not carry.

The result flipped Connecticut away from the Democratic it had supported in 1912. Connecticut did not move alone — neighboring New York, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island broke the same way in 1916. Across the 60 presidential elections Connecticut has taken part in, it has most often sided with the Democratic party (24 times). The vote fell within the Progressive Era — Trust-busting, suffrage, and World War I.

In the national count, Woodrow Wilson took 277 of the 531 electoral votes, against Charles Evans Hughes's 254. Woodrow Wilson led the national popular vote with 49.24% of the ballots cast.
