Arkansas in 1916
The 1916 contest saw Arkansas line up behind Wilson, delivering 9 electoral votes to the Democratic ticket. Arkansas ended up on the winning side — Woodrow Wilson captured the White House that year.
It marked the 11th consecutive election in which Arkansas backed the Democratic party, a streak reaching back to 1876. Arkansas did not move alone — neighboring Missouri, Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, and Oklahoma broke the same way in 1916. Across the 47 presidential elections Arkansas has taken part in, it has most often sided with the Democratic party (32 times). The vote fell within the Progressive Era — Trust-busting, suffrage, and World War I.
In the national count, Woodrow Wilson took 277 of the 531 electoral votes, against Charles Evans Hughes's 254. Woodrow Wilson led the national popular vote with 49.24% of the ballots cast.
