Reading the 1892 result in North Dakota

North Dakota backed Harrison (Republican) in the 1892 presidential election, casting 3 electoral votes for the ticket. Nationally the result broke the other way — Grover Cleveland (Democratic) won the presidency, leaving North Dakota among the states he did not carry.

It marked the 2nd consecutive election in which North Dakota backed the Republican party, a streak reaching back to 1888. The region divided — South Dakota and Minnesota joined North Dakota for the Republican ticket, while Montana did not. Across the 35 presidential elections North Dakota has taken part in, it has most often sided with the Republican party (30 times). The vote fell within the Gilded Age — Industrialization, narrow margins, and patronage politics.

In the national count, Grover Cleveland took 277 of the 444 electoral votes, against Benjamin Harrison's 145. Grover Cleveland led the national popular vote with 46.02% of the ballots cast.
