Minnesota in 1884

The 1884 contest saw Minnesota line up behind Blaine, delivering 7 electoral votes to the Republican ticket. Nationally the result broke the other way — Grover Cleveland (Democratic) won the presidency, leaving Minnesota among the states he did not carry.

It marked the 8th consecutive election in which Minnesota backed the Republican party, a streak reaching back to 1856. Minnesota did not move alone — neighboring Iowa and Wisconsin broke the same way in 1884. Across the 43 presidential elections Minnesota has taken part in, it has most often sided with the Democratic party (23 times). The vote fell within the Gilded Age — Industrialization, narrow margins, and patronage politics.

In the national count, Grover Cleveland took 219 of the 401 electoral votes, against James G. Blaine's 182. Grover Cleveland led the national popular vote with 48.85% of the ballots cast.
