1872
Minnesota in 1872
The 1872 contest saw Minnesota line up behind Grant, delivering 5 electoral votes to the Republican ticket. That placed Minnesota with the eventual winner: Ulysses S. Grant went on to take the presidency, and Minnesota was part of his column.
Minnesota stayed in the Republican column for the 5th straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1856. Minnesota did not move alone — neighboring Iowa and Wisconsin broke the same way in 1872. Over its 43 recorded presidential cycles, Minnesota has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 23 times in all. The vote fell within the Reconstruction — Republican rule and contested returns.
Nationally, Ulysses S. Grant finished with 286 of the 352 electoral votes to Thomas A. Hendricks's 42. Ulysses S. Grant led the national popular vote with 55.58% of the ballots cast.
