In 1852, Indiana awarded its 13 electoral votes to Pierce of the Democratic party. That placed Indiana with the eventual winner: Franklin Pierce went on to take the presidency, and Indiana was part of his column.

Indiana stayed in the Democratic column for the 3rd straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1844. The region divided — Illinois, Ohio, and Michigan joined Indiana for the Democratic ticket, while Kentucky did not. Over its 53 recorded presidential cycles, Indiana has backed the Republican party more than any other — 32 times in all.
