Indiana in 1872

The 1872 contest saw Indiana line up behind Grant, delivering 15 electoral votes to the Republican ticket. That placed Indiana with the eventual winner: Ulysses S. Grant went on to take the presidency, and Indiana was part of his column.

The result flipped Indiana away from the Democratic it had supported in 1868. The region divided — Illinois, Ohio, and Michigan joined Indiana for the Republican ticket, while Kentucky did not. Over its 53 recorded presidential cycles, Indiana has backed the Republican party more than any other — 32 times in all. The vote fell within the Reconstruction — Republican rule and contested returns.

Nationally, Ulysses S. Grant finished with 286 of the 352 electoral votes to Thomas A. Hendricks's 42. Ulysses S. Grant led the national popular vote with 55.58% of the ballots cast.
