Delaware in 1852

The 1852 contest saw Delaware line up behind Scott, delivering 3 electoral votes to the Whig ticket. The presidency went elsewhere: Franklin Pierce (Democratic) won nationally, while Delaware had backed a different ticket.

Delaware stayed in the Whig column for the 5th straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1836. It stood apart from its neighbors: Maryland, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey went the other way that year. Over its 60 recorded presidential cycles, Delaware has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 23 times in all. The vote fell within the Second Party System — Jackson, Whigs, and the rise of mass politics.

Nationally, Franklin Pierce finished with 254 of the 296 electoral votes to Winfield Scott's 42. Franklin Pierce led the national popular vote with 50.83% of the ballots cast.
