Delaware in 1864

The 1864 contest saw Delaware line up behind McClellan, delivering 3 electoral votes to the Democratic ticket. Nationally the result broke the other way — Abraham Lincoln (Republican) won the presidency, leaving Delaware among the states he did not carry.

The result flipped Delaware away from the Southern Democratic it had supported in 1860. The region divided — New Jersey joined Delaware for the Democratic ticket, while Maryland and Pennsylvania did not. Across the 60 presidential elections Delaware has taken part in, it has most often sided with the Democratic party (23 times). The vote fell within the Civil War — Lincoln, war, and Reconstruction begins.

In the national count, Abraham Lincoln took 212 of the 233 electoral votes, against George B. McClellan's 21. Abraham Lincoln led the national popular vote with 55.03% of the ballots cast.
