The 1848 contest saw Virginia line up behind Cass, delivering 17 electoral votes to the Democratic ticket. Nationally the result broke the other way — Zachary Taylor (Whig) won the presidency, leaving Virginia among the states he did not carry.

It marked the 6th consecutive election in which Virginia backed the Democratic party, a streak reaching back to 1828. The region divided — North Carolina joined Virginia for the Democratic ticket, while Tennessee, Kentucky, and Maryland did not.
