1872
Virginia in 1872
The 1872 contest saw Virginia line up behind Greeley, delivering 11 electoral votes to the Democratic ticket. The presidency went elsewhere: Ulysses S. Grant (Republican) won nationally, while Virginia had backed a different ticket.
The result flipped Virginia away from the Constitutional Union it had supported in 1860. The region divided — Tennessee, Kentucky, West Virginia, and Maryland joined Virginia for the Democratic ticket, while North Carolina did not. Over its 58 recorded presidential cycles, Virginia has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 33 times in all. The vote fell within the Reconstruction — Republican rule and contested returns.
Nationally, Ulysses S. Grant finished with 286 of the 352 electoral votes to Thomas A. Hendricks's 42. Ulysses S. Grant led the national popular vote with 55.58% of the ballots cast.
