Tennessee in 1848

The 1848 contest saw Tennessee line up behind Taylor, delivering 13 electoral votes to the Whig ticket. That placed Tennessee with the eventual winner: Zachary Taylor went on to take the presidency, and Tennessee was part of his column.

Tennessee stayed in the Whig column for the 4th straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1836. The region divided — Kentucky and Georgia joined Tennessee for the Whig ticket, while Virginia, North Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Missouri did not. Over its 57 recorded presidential cycles, Tennessee has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 24 times in all. The vote fell within the Second Party System — Jackson, Whigs, and the rise of mass politics.

Nationally, Zachary Taylor finished with 163 of the 290 electoral votes to Lewis Cass's 127. Zachary Taylor led the national popular vote with 47.28% of the ballots cast.
