1868
Reading the 1868 result in Tennessee
Tennessee backed Grant (Republican) in the 1868 presidential election, casting 10 electoral votes for the ticket. That placed Tennessee with the eventual winner: Ulysses S. Grant went on to take the presidency, and Tennessee was part of his column.
The result flipped Tennessee away from the Constitutional Union it had supported in 1860. The region divided — North Carolina, Alabama, Arkansas, and Missouri joined Tennessee for the Republican ticket, while Kentucky and Georgia did not. Over its 57 recorded presidential cycles, Tennessee has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 24 times in all. The vote fell within the Reconstruction — Republican rule and contested returns.
Nationally, Ulysses S. Grant finished with 214 of the 294 electoral votes to Horatio Seymour's 80. Ulysses S. Grant led the national popular vote with 52.66% of the ballots cast.
