The 1848 contest saw New York line up behind Taylor, delivering 36 electoral votes to the Whig ticket. New York ended up on the winning side — Zachary Taylor captured the White House that year.

Taylor's win closed out New York's 5-election run of voting Democratic. The region divided — Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Massachusetts, and Vermont joined New York for the Whig ticket, while Connecticut did not. Across the 60 presidential elections New York has taken part in, it has most often sided with the Democratic party (29 times).
