Georgia in 1848

The 1848 contest saw Georgia line up behind Taylor, delivering 10 electoral votes to the Whig ticket. That placed Georgia with the eventual winner: Zachary Taylor went on to take the presidency, and Georgia was part of his column.

The result flipped Georgia away from the Democratic ticket it had backed in each of the previous 2 cycles. The region divided — Tennessee joined Georgia for the Whig ticket, while Florida, Alabama, North Carolina, and South Carolina did not. Over its 59 recorded presidential cycles, Georgia has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 34 times in all. The vote fell within the Second Party System — Jackson, Whigs, and the rise of mass politics.

Nationally, Zachary Taylor finished with 163 of the 290 electoral votes to Lewis Cass's 127. Zachary Taylor led the national popular vote with 47.28% of the ballots cast.
