1848
What happened in Connecticut, 1848
In 1848, Connecticut awarded its 6 electoral votes to Cass of the Democratic party. Nationally the result broke the other way — Zachary Taylor (Whig) won the presidency, leaving Connecticut among the states he did not carry.
Cass's win closed out Connecticut's 2-election run of voting Whig. It stood apart from its neighbors: New York, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island went the other way that year. Across the 60 presidential elections Connecticut has taken part in, it has most often sided with the Democratic party (24 times). The vote fell within the Second Party System — Jackson, Whigs, and the rise of mass politics.
In the national count, Zachary Taylor took 163 of the 290 electoral votes, against Lewis Cass's 127. Zachary Taylor led the national popular vote with 47.28% of the ballots cast.
