1816
Pennsylvania in 1816
The 1816 contest saw Pennsylvania line up behind Monroe, delivering 25 electoral votes to the Democratic-Republican ticket. That placed Pennsylvania with the eventual winner: James Monroe went on to take the presidency, and Pennsylvania was part of his column.
Pennsylvania stayed in the Democratic-Republican column for the 6th straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1796. The region divided — Ohio, Maryland, New Jersey, and New York joined Pennsylvania for the Democratic-Republican ticket, while Delaware did not. Over its 60 recorded presidential cycles, Pennsylvania has backed the Republican party more than any other — 26 times in all. The vote fell within the First Party System — Federalists vs Democratic-Republicans.
Nationally, James Monroe finished with 183 of the 217 electoral votes to Rufus King's 34.
