James Monroe vs Rufus King — James Monroe won in a near-landslide as the Federalist Party collapsed following its opposition to the War of 1812. Rufus King of New York made the last viable Federalist presidential run but carried only three New England states. Monroe's victory ushered in the 'Era of Good Feelings,' a period of relative partisan harmony. The Federalist Party effectively ceased to exist as a national force after this election.

In 1816, James Monroe (Democratic-Republican) won the U.S. presidency. James Monroe took 183 of the 217 electoral votes to Rufus King's 34. The race falls within the First Party System era; the lesson packets below dig into its central debates, with Post-war nationalism among the major themes.
