1816
What happened in Indiana, 1816
In 1816, Indiana awarded its 3 electoral votes to Monroe of the Democratic-Republican party. That placed Indiana with the eventual winner: James Monroe went on to take the presidency, and Indiana was part of his column.
1816 was the first presidential election in which Indiana cast electoral votes. Indiana did not move alone — neighboring Illinois, Kentucky, and Ohio broke the same way in 1816. Over its 53 recorded presidential cycles, Indiana has backed the Republican party more than any other — 32 times in all. The vote fell within the First Party System — Federalists vs Democratic-Republicans.
Nationally, James Monroe finished with 183 of the 217 electoral votes to Rufus King's 34.
